Developing Sustainable New Products
Encouraging innovation and sustainability in the craft sector is a DFSD priority. We are currently working with collaborators, designers and artisans on a number of promising projects including:
- Increasing banana fiber production and developing a range of banana fiber products for sale
- Producing ‘leather’ from palms for use in craft items and more widely
- Developing sustainable methods for treating Palmyra palm so it can be used for a wider variety of products
Together with AOD designer, Deanne Edirisuriya, in collaboration with ECO Spindles, our artisans have produced a beautiful, wearable, handwoven, range of clothes, which debuted at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Sri Lanka (MBFWSL) in 2021.
This range is unique, as it uses yarn made out of PET bottles, to weave sarees, dresses, and coats.
We are proud to be a part of this great initiative by practically applying sustainability to our designs.
